The crew of the Carolus Quinto is recruted mainly from the ranks of the Sea-Scouts "De Wilde Eend". Each crewmember has a considerable amount of nautical experience, despite their age, in the art of sailing, as well as in the technique of rowing.
The Carolus is, like any Bantry Bay Yawl, a very intensive ship. You can't sail her with a crew of less than six members. The crew must be perfectly adapted to each other. The slightest lapse in concentration can have serious results. The masts, for instance, are unrigged. The halyards serve as rigging. If the boat goes through a tack, the sails have to be lowered to switch sides. At the same time, the halyards need to be cleated off, before the sheets are put under tension, and the sails fill with wind. If you're just a second too late, there is a risk that the mast breaks.
Both the "Atlantic Challenge" and the "Défi des Jeunes Marins" require a mixed crew. That this crew has been working together with the opposite sex from a very young age , was proven at the Défi 2000 in Douarnenez. They managed to obtain a very decent fifth place, even though they had never hoisted a sail of the boat before the first regatta .
You have to be minimum 15 and maximum 25 jaar , to participate. Despite their young age, our crew can rely on a few decades of experience. In the sea-scouts, they have been tought to handle anything afloat, from surf board to two-masted schooners, from rubber raft to outboard powered vessels.
A team consists of 20 members. Out of this, a crew of thirteen is selected for each regatta. There is a core crew of ten people for the rowing regattas, and a core of ten for the sailing events. These ten are than assisted by three persons from the other core crew. These three are chosen, based on the conditions. For instance, in the case of a light wind sailing regatta, the sailing core crew will be reinforced by three light rowers. Should weather conditions require more muscle power, the heavier rowers will be used as added balast.
